Nugent is from the Sustainable Agricultural Research Unit (SARI) in Western Australia. He begins with a brief description of the system of permaculture and his attitude to native and exotic plants.

The use of agave and cactus effectively are seen as a possible answer to global warming. They can be used for land rehabilitation, low effort emergency food, medicine, housing materials, fences and alcohol.

Each plant entry is accompanied by a brief botanical description, its location and its possible use, e.g. Opuntia is used as stock feed, a poultice for bruises, soap, salad or a burglar alarum when laid outside the house.

The language is aimed at the non-botanical reader who wants his information in digestible form and simple propagation methods are provided.
